Book Vending Machine Project

The Kiwanis Club of East Lansing is working on a “Signature Project”. The project consists of fundraising for purchasing & placing Book Vending Machines in our East Lansing Elementary and Middle schools.

A Book Vending Machine is a great way to introduce students to the world of books. The goal is to increase literacy by creating a rewarding experience. Students get excited for a trip to the vending machine to choose a “take home to keep” book of their choice!

Students eagerly anticipate the next book they will discover, creating a positive association with reading. This enthusiasm extends beyond the initial selection, as students often share their newfound treasures with their peers, sparking conversations and forming book clubs. Book vending machines become hubs of literary exploration, igniting a passion for reading that transcends the classroom.

Dori Leyko sent out the following message in the bi-weekly newsletter that goes to every parent of an EL student.
Thank You to the Kiwanis Club of East Lansing! The Kiwanis Club of East Lansing will be providing its first Book Vending Machine to ELPS after the start of the new year! Historically, the Kiwanis Club has provided dictionaries to all 3rd -grade students and thesauri to middle school students. As students are more likely to use online sources as a replacement for paper dictionaries and thesauri, their support of literacy will shift toward providing Book Vending Machines in our school buildings. These vending machines cost approximately $7000 each, with the books being an additional cost. This project will be ongoing as funds are raised, and the tokens for books will also support our PBIS initiatives at our buildings. Many thanks to the Kiwanis Club of East Lansing – we will update you when our first machine is placed! Thank you again EL Kiwanis.

Donley’s Book vending machine arrived today…..can’t wait for the unveiling tomorrow.
